Hotel Riu Palace Santa Maria holds a specific distinction: it is the largest Riu Palace property in the world by room count, with 1,001 rooms opened in February 2021. This matters in practice — the Splash Water World it operates on-site is the largest on Sal island, and unlike most properties where water park access is a privilege from a neighbor, Santa Maria owns the park and grants access to guests at adjacent Riu properties. The scale also supports a dining program large enough to absorb 1,001 guests without constant buffet queues, something smaller properties with this footfall struggle to manage.
Sal island is a specific choice. It's among the flattest and driest of the Cape Verde islands — minimal vegetation, a consistent trade wind, and beaches that are white-sand rather than the volcanic black common elsewhere in the archipelago. Praia de Santa Maria (Ponta do Sinó) is the beach here, with direct resort frontage. The island doesn't offer much off-property — the town of Santa Maria has restaurants and some nightlife, but Sal is primarily a resort-and-beach destination. Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID) is 19km away, approximately 10 minutes by transfer.
The property opened in 2021 with no prior renovation history. At this scale — 1,001 rooms, 13 dining and bar venues, 6 outdoor pools, a dedicated children's pool, and 8 treatment rooms in the spa — the resort is designed to be self-contained. The RiuLand kids' club runs daily for ages 4–7 and 8–12. The Cimboa Lounge Bar has an indoor stage and terrace, operating as the entertainment hub.
The dining program includes three specialty à la carte restaurants (Krystal fusion, Dorayaki Japanese, La Pappardella Italian), all reservation-required, plus the Praia poolside restaurant that doubles as a steakhouse at dinner. Palmeira is the main buffet with live show-cooking stations and themed dinners twice weekly.
