Guests Warn

  • Dining Consistency & Booking

Some guests report issues with buffet food temperature or replenishment, and difficulties securing reservations for à la carte restaurants, which often seem fully booked yet empty.

While overall service is excellent, isolated complaints exist regarding inconsistent or unhelpful attitudes from front desk staff, particularly during check-in/out.

  • Room Maintenance

Despite recent renovations, a few guests have noted minor room-specific issues such as overly cold temperatures, wet floors, moldy smells, or non-functional amenities like TVs.

  • External Noise & Vendors

The resort's proximity to a road can result in traffic noise, and persistent, albeit generally polite, vendors on the beach are a recurring point of mention for some guests.

Overview

Bloody Bay Beach is one of Jamaica's better swimming beaches. Unlike the rocky cliff sections around Rick's Café to the south, or some sections of Seven Mile Beach that have seaweed issues, Bloody Bay offers clear, calm water with white sand. Riu Negril sits directly on it, and the December 2024 renovation brings all facilities to current standard — this is relevant because several older reviews mentioned dated rooms, and the complete top-to-bottom refurbishment addresses those concerns.

The swim-up rooms are worth highlighting specifically: the Swim-Up Ocean Front category puts guests in ground-floor rooms with direct access to a pool that faces the ocean. Given the beach quality and the room category options, this is one of the better swim-up room situations in Riu's Jamaica portfolio.

The Jerk Station is a recurring highlight in guest reviews — specifically, the advice from guests is to order 'no chop' jerk chicken and to try both sauces. This kind of specific, real advice in reviews indicates the Jerk Station is worth genuinely engaging with, not just walking past. Hair braiding in the spa menu is also specific to this property's Caribbean setting in a way that most Riu spa menus aren't.

The honest operational friction: drinks are described as watered down in reviews unless you tip the bartenders. À la carte restaurants fill quickly despite appearing empty — they're often reserved in advance via the app for the following day. Beach vendors at Bloody Bay approach resort guests persistently — this is a Jamaica-wide characteristic, not unique to this resort, but it's consistent enough to mention.

Practically: Approximately 70 km from Montego Bay's Sangster Airport (MBJ), roughly 75–90 minutes by car. No Negril airport — the MBJ transfer is the standard option. 24-hour all-inclusive with 20 dining and drinking venues.

Pros

  • +December 2024 full renovation means all rooms and facilities are in current condition — the dated-room concerns from pre-2024 reviews no longer apply
  • +Bloody Bay Beach has consistently better water clarity and swimming conditions than many Seven Mile Beach sections
  • +Jamaican Java Sugar Scrub and Hair Braiding are spa treatments specific to the Caribbean setting — genuinely worth booking at least one
  • +The Swim-Up Ocean Front room category combines pool access with direct ocean views — one of the better swim-up room situations in Riu's Jamaica portfolio

Cons

  • −À la carte restaurants fill quickly — they appear empty but are pre-reserved through the app; book for the following day as soon as you arrive
  • −Drinks are noted in reviews as watered down unless tips are given — budget for tipping bartenders if drink quality matters to you
  • −Beach vendors at Bloody Bay approach resort guests persistently — this is standard in Negril but requires a firm 'no thank you'

Tips

  • Book specialty restaurant reservations via the Riu app for the following day — not the current day — as same-day bookings are typically already gone
  • Order the Jerk Station jerk chicken 'no chop' and try both sauces — this specific advice from multiple guest reviews is worth following
  • Tip bartenders from the first drink — staff at this resort respond noticeably to tipping and it affects drink strength and service speed
  • The lobby bar serves the best coffee on the property — use it in the morning rather than the buffet coffee machines
  • The Jamaican Java Sugar Scrub is the one spa treatment that's unique to this property and worth booking — schedule it for mid-trip, not the first or last day
