Bar Staff Inconsistency

Booking.com
The beach is not at the resort. That's the single most important thing to understand about Riu Lupita before booking. The property is set in tropical gardens in Playa del Carmen's resort zone, and guests access the Caribbean via a free shuttle to a separate beach club. Some guests love this arrangement — the gardens are genuinely lush and the pools at the main property are more elaborate than a pure beachfront building allows. Others book expecting a walk-from-room-to-water experience and feel misled. Be clear on which type of vacation you want.
What Lupita does well for families with kids is the combination of the adults-only quiet pool and the main activities pool — they're distinct enough that parents get an actual respite zone. The 18-hole golf course access included in the all-inclusive rate is unusual at this price tier; most Riviera Maya resorts charge green fees separately. If golf is part of the trip, this is worth factoring into the value calculation.
Coatis — the large, raccoon-like mammals native to the Yucatan jungle — appear near outdoor dining areas. They're confident and will approach tables if food is left unattended. This is mentioned consistently in reviews. Not a dealbreaker for most guests, but relevant for families with young children who might startle at a raccoon-sized animal appearing under the table.
Practically: Located in Playa del Carmen's tourist zone, walking distance to Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) and the town center — a real advantage over more isolated Riviera Maya resorts. The shuttle to the beach club runs throughout the day. 2015 renovation updated bathrooms (replacing bathtubs with walk-in showers). Nearest airport is Cancún International (CUN), approximately 60 minutes' drive.
