Localized Service Inconsistencies
While overall service is good, specific areas like Coco Plum Beach Lounge and concierge services sometimes experience slower service or communication issues.
Remote Location Access
The resort's secluded nature means a considerable 90-minute drive from Punta Cana Airport, which requires careful planning for transfers.
Biting Insects
A few guests reported the presence of mosquitoes and sand fleas, particularly in beach and pool areas, advising guests to bring repellent.
High Cost of Additional Services
Be aware that spa treatments, premium dining (like the steakhouse), and off-resort excursions come with notably high additional charges.

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda opened in 2019 as the brand's first Exclusive Collection property in the Americas, and the concept behind it is genuinely distinct from other Dominican Republic all-inclusives: four separate boutique villages (Archipelago, Caribbean Paradise, Emerald Jungle, Explorer Cove) each built around a different aesthetic and guest type, spread across a stretch of undeveloped coastline in the Michès region. You're not arriving at the resort equivalent of a shopping mall; the villages feel like separate places connected by paths through tropical vegetation.
The resort works best for adults-only couples willing to pay for the Archipelago village, which gives you an oceanfront suite with a private plunge pool and direct private beach access. It also works for families who want the La Perla suite section in Explorer Cove — dedicated family pool, concierge, family bar, and the kids' clubs a short walk away. What it doesn't do well is deliver value for guests who book a standard Deluxe garden-view room and expect 5-star luxury throughout — at that price point, the room is not dramatically better than Punta Cana's standard all-inclusive stock.
The honest issue is the transfer time: 75–90 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) on a road that passes through a region with minimal tourist infrastructure. Guests who miss flights because of underestimated transfer times appear in reviews. Plan transfers conservatively. Also: mosquitoes and sand fleas are noted in guest feedback — insect repellent is not optional here.
Practically: 335 rooms and suites across the four villages. Executive Chef trained in Michelin-starred restaurants. Coal & Copper steakhouse costs extra. Coco Plum Beach Lounge requires reservations. The all-inclusive includes over 25 daily activities. Green Globe certified, BREEAM construction standards.
