Exceptional Kids' Clubs
The comprehensive, high-quality, and engaging children's programs are almost universally lauded as a standout feature, allowing parents free time while ensuring children have a fantastic experience.
High-Quality Food
Guests consistently praise the exceptional standard of food, particularly the buffet, with its wide selection, fresh ingredients, and gourmet offerings, often highlighting desserts and ice cream.
Engaging Staff (G.O.s)
The friendly, attentive, and energetic staff who actively participate in guest activities and entertainment are a cornerstone of the Club Med experience and consistently praised.
Diverse Activities & Sports
The sheer number and quality of included sports facilities and lessons, from golf and tennis to flying trapeze, are a major draw for active guests of all ages.
Tranquil Zen Zone
This dedicated adults-only quiet area featuring a natural freshwater pool overlooking the Atlantic is frequently mentioned as a highly appreciated feature for relaxation.
Potential for Dated Accommodation
Some recent reviews indicate that parts of the resort, including rooms and equipment, could benefit from refurbishment and may appear 'tired and old'.
Noise Levels During Peak Season
During peak season or evening entertainment, the resort can be lively, and noise might be a concern for light sleepers or those seeking absolute quiet in their rooms.
Extra Childcare and Spa Costs
While many kids' clubs are included, dedicated childcare for babies and toddlers (under 4) and all spa treatments incur additional expenses.
Food Variety Over Long Stays
Although food quality is high, a few longer-stay guests noted that the variety could feel repetitive after an extended period.
Cold Atlantic Ocean Water
While the beach is beautiful, the Atlantic waters can sometimes be windy, have strong currents, and be cold, making ocean swimming less inviting.

The defining feature of Da Balaia is the clifftop setting above Maria Luísa Beach — the resort's red sandstone promontory puts the Atlantic in view from most of the 389 rooms, and the Zen Natural Pool at the clifftop edge is the single most appealing space on the property. That ecological pool uses natural plant filtration, operates adults-only (18+), closes Sundays for regeneration, and has its own bar. It's a genuinely unusual amenity in the Club Med portfolio.
The resort suits families with children of nearly any age — kids' clubs run from 4 months (Baby Club Med, extra cost) through 17, and the Mini Club Med program includes flying trapeze, tennis, and golf within the supervised day. Couples without children can get full value from the Zen zone and the Vasco Gourmet Lounge, but the property is optimized for families. Guests looking for a quiet adults-only retreat should look elsewhere.
The honest constraint: the main beach is beautiful but the Atlantic here has variable surf and currents — it's good for water sports (kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing are all included), not reliably calm for casual swimming. The main pool handles the swimming role for most guests. Room quality varies across three buildings (Lisboa, Coimbra, Belem), and some rooms draw noise complaints from the O'Teatro nightclub; request higher floors away from central areas if this matters.
From Faro Airport (FAO), the resort is 30–35 km, typically 30–40 minutes by transfer. The Algarve's golf infrastructure is accessible from the resort — Balaia Golf Club facilities (driving range, putting green, bunker) are included, though green fees at external courses and range balls outside lessons cost extra.
The Vasco Gourmet Lounge's Monday–Friday dinner service is the highest-quality dining moment — reserve at check-in. The La Cave wine cellar inside Vasco does tasting sessions for an extra charge, with a serious selection of Portuguese wines and ports.
