Lush Grounds & Wildlife
Guests consistently praise the resort's beautiful, well-maintained tropical grounds, which create an exotic atmosphere, enhanced by frequent sightings of coatis, iguanas, and various birds.
Exceptional Specialty Dining
The à la carte restaurants, including Italian, seafood, and Brazilian options, receive high acclaim for their food quality, presentation, and service, often exceeding all-inclusive expectations.
Friendly & Attentive Staff
The professionalism, warmth, and helpfulness of the resort staff are a significant highlight, with many guests noting their exceptional service contributes greatly to a pleasant stay.
Multi-Resort Access
The 'Stay at 1, Play at more' concept is a major draw, providing guests with expanded dining, pool, and entertainment options across the wider Bahia Principe complex.
Cleanliness & Spaciousness
The resort is appreciated for its overall cleanliness, well-kept facilities, and ample space, which prevents it from feeling overcrowded despite its large size.
Restaurant Reservation Frustration
The most common complaint involves significant difficulty booking à la carte restaurants, often finding them fully booked even when half-empty, leading to frustration in utilizing the unlimited dining benefit.
Inconsistent Room Quality
Accommodation quality can be unpredictable, with some rooms being renovated and luxurious, while others in older sections are described as dated or prone to maintenance issues like plumbing problems.
Variable Beach Conditions
While beachfront, the resort's beach can be affected by significant seaweed presence and rocky areas, which may impact the swimming experience at certain times of the year.
Mediocre Drink Quality
Apart from praised cocktails, guests sometimes find the general quality of house drinks and wines to be disappointing or marginal, not always meeting luxury expectations.
Resort Size & Shuttle Dependency
The vastness of the resort complex, while offering many amenities, means guests rely heavily on the internal shuttle system, which can involve waiting times and long walks.

Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal is the Luxury-tier property in the Bahia Principe Riviera Maya complex — a step up in category from the Grand hotels, with a Mayan architecture design, adults-only infinity pool, and the 'Stay at 1, Play at 4' exchange privilege that opens dining and facilities across Grand Tulum, Grand Coba, Luxury Sian Ka'an, and Akumal itself. At 758 rooms, it's larger than most Luxury-category all-inclusives.
The speciality restaurants Dolce Vita (Italian), Frutos del Mar (seafood), and La Gran Tortuga (Brazilian) consistently receive the best food reviews. The jungle grounds, with iguanas, raccoons, and coatis, provide more natural atmosphere than beach-strip resorts. The adults-only infinity pool is the quietest water area on the property.
Two significant caveats: restaurant reservation difficulty is a consistent complaint — guests report à la carte restaurants appearing fully booked despite visible empty tables, which multiple reviews describe as a systemic reservation management issue. Book immediately at check-in and be persistent. The beach also has seaweed problems that have made it temporarily unusable for swimming on some weeks — check reports before travel in peak seaweed season (June–September).
Important 2026 note: 252 rooms close for renovation from April 10 to November 30, 2026. If booking during that period, confirm your room block is not affected. The resort opened in 2001 and is approximately 80 minutes from Cancún International Airport (CUN).
