This Boutique Bonaire Hotel Has a New Leader, and the Reef Is Its Amenity

Bellafonte Bonaire, one of the best-known boutique hotels on the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire, has named Britt Thomassen its new general manager.

Thomassen takes over the 22-unit oceanfront property from longtime general manager Carlijn Verf, whom the hotel credited with helping shape Bellafonte over the past several years. She arrives from Belnem House Bonaire, where she served as operations manager and was involved with that property from its opening, giving her experience with both launching and running a hotel on the island.

A hotel built around the sea

Bellafonte is defined by its private pier and immediate access to Bonaire's celebrated reef system, home to roughly 60 varieties of coral. Guests walk down the hotel's pier, step off a ladder, and enter the waters of the Bonaire National Marine Park, which begins right at the waterline. The apartment-style accommodations, all oriented toward the water, make the property well suited to the longer stays common among divers and snorkelers.

Leadership changes carry outsized weight at small hotels, where the general manager is closely involved in nearly every part of the guest experience, from arrivals and housekeeping to the daily rhythms around the pier. Bellafonte said Thomassen's arrival would continue its emphasis on personalized service and quality.

The appointment comes as Bonaire draws growing attention from U.S. travelers alongside its traditionally strong Dutch base, helped by nonstop flights from New York and other major gateways. Diving remains the primary draw: 40.3 percent of American visitors in June identified it as their main reason for the trip. Bellafonte occupies its own niche in that market, small, residential, and built around the reef rather than a sprawling resort campus.
