The Founder of One of the World's Most Iconic Luxury Hotel Brands Just Stepped Aside — After More Than 60 Years

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts has named Robert Fritz as its new executive chairman, marking a significant leadership transition for one of the world's most recognized luxury hospitality brands. Founder Isadore Sharp, who built Four Seasons from a single Toronto motor hotel in 1961 into a global luxury powerhouse, will take on the title of chairman emeritus.

Fritz comes from Cascade Investment, the private firm controlled by Bill Gates that holds a majority stake in Four Seasons. He has served as lead director on the company's board since 2022 and will now work directly alongside President and CEO Alejandro Reynal to shape the brand's long-term direction.

The move comes at a pivotal moment for the Toronto-based company. Four Seasons currently operates more than 136 hotels and resorts and 61 branded residential properties worldwide, with a development pipeline of over 60 projects. The company has set an ambitious target of reaching 180 properties by 2033, a goal that would represent roughly a 30 percent expansion from its current footprint.

Sharp's transition doesn't signal a departure — the company says he will remain closely involved and continue to represent the brand. But the formalization of Fritz's role suggests Four Seasons is preparing for its next growth phase under leadership that's more closely tied to its majority ownership structure.

The residential side of the business has become an increasingly important growth engine for Four Seasons, with branded residences now accounting for a significant share of the pipeline. Last year, the company announced plans for a new luxury resort and residences in Telluride, Colorado, expanding its ski portfolio alongside properties in destinations like Jackson Hole and Whistler.
