This Adults-Only Aruba Retreat Skips the Beach for Something Completely Different

On an island famous for white sand and beachfront towers, one Aruba retreat asks guests to turn inland instead. Santa Lucia Landhuis & Cunucu sits at the foot of Arikok National Park with just three private casitas spread across 10 acres of desert — an adults-only escape far removed from Palm Beach and Eagle Beach.

The setting is dry, open and dramatic: cacti, divi-divi trees and rocky hills in place of beach chairs and casinos. About 15 minutes from Queen Beatrix International Airport, the property feels almost secret, partly because there is very little else like it on the island.

Guests stay in one of three freestanding cunucu houses — named Shoco, Kinikini and Barica Geel — designed after Aruba's traditional country homes but fitted with contemporary comforts. Each includes a separate king bedroom, a kitchenette, a living and dining area, and two outdoor patios angled to catch sunrise coffee and sunset skies.

A large swimming pool forms the social heart of the retreat, though even here the mood stays quiet, with views across the national park rather than competing music from neighboring resorts. With only three houses, privacy is built into every stay.

The location turns a vacation into an adventure. Arikok's caves, desert roads and hiking trails are right outside, and the Casibari and Ayo rock formations sit nearby. The retreat leans eco-conscious too, with recycling, composting, solar-powered outdoor lighting and bath products made locally in Aruba. It is best suited to couples, returning visitors and anyone who has already seen the island's resort strip and wants to discover its wilder, quieter side.
