1 Hotels, the sustainability-focused luxury brand founded by Barry Sternlicht, has opened its first property in Japan. The 211-room 1 Hotel Tokyo occupies floors 38 through 43 of Akasaka Trust Tower, a mixed-use development in central Tokyo built in partnership with Mori Trust.

Design With a Mission

The property achieved CASBEE S certification — Japan’s highest environmental building rating. Biophilic design runs throughout the hotel, with preserved moss installations, recycled materials, and locally crafted decor. The 211 rooms include 20 suites and three Penthouse Collection suites with sweeping city views.

Three food and beverage venues anchor the social spaces: NiNi, a French Riviera-meets-Japanese restaurant; Spotted Stone, a lounge and nightclub; and Neighbors Cafe for more casual dining. A Bamford Wellness Spa, indoor pool, and over 460 square meters of event space complete the amenity package.

A Growing Footprint

1 Hotels (part of SH Hotels and Resorts, a Starwood Capital Group company) has been expanding steadily beyond its original U.S. base, with properties now in London, Paris, and Cabo San Lucas. The Tokyo opening represents the brand’s first move into Asia — a market where sustainability-driven luxury is a growing segment.

The partnership with Mori Trust, one of Japan’s most prominent real estate developers, gives the brand immediate credibility in a market where foreign hotel operators often struggle to gain traction.
